Poaching control

captured poacher Driving to the southern extremity we meet the Game Scouts who have apprehended a poacher. He is loaded onto the Landcruiser and tied to the back to prevent escape and taken to the Ndevu Scouts camp.

Chriss discusses with the Scouts how to try to discover the poachers accomplices, equipment and camp.

The unit in this area is comprised of Senior Scout Abdon Mwanza, who is an Induna of the local area chief - Senior Chief Luembe of the Nsenga-Ambo tribe. The arresting Scouts (wearing hats) are Ackim Njlobvu, who is an ex-poacher and Steven Nyendwa, who is Senior Chief Luembe's nephew.

burning poacher camp By playing 'good cop/bad cop' the Scouts get the poacher to lead them to his temporary hut built in thick bush on the edge of the Nyimba river. The accomplices have long disappeared!

The Scouts set fire to the poaching camp!

Looking for weapons The Scouts continue with the interrogation and discover that the poacher is Bandson Lungu from Chief Ndake's area. They also determine he may be a member of the 'Rambo Organized Commercial Poaching Gang'. This gang has a .375 rifle, Ak 47, A shotgun and a few muzzle loaders.

What is unique about the 'Rambo' gang is that they take shots at law enforcement folks every so often and leave notes tacked to trees noting that 'Rambo was here'.

Discussing solution After the search turned up a few more snares - but no weapons - and approaching darkness prevented further searching, the poacher was delivered into the custody of the local Zambian National Parks & Wildlife Service. However all the NPWS scouts were so drunk that discussions had to be put off until the next morning.

At Ndevu camp the next morning, on the left, Morse Manzole Unit Leader of the NPWS West Petauke Area GMA (17) discusses charges with Chriss Weinand and John Monze. John handles all community affairs for the Ndevu operation.
